Argonner Elementary School Improvement Plan (SIP)

GOAL: All students will improve vocabulary, summarizing , and analysis skills in order to increase comprehension across the curriculum.

At Argonner, we are dedicated to promoting success and high achievement. Each teacher plays a vital role in our School Improvement Plan by committing to one of four Cadres: Assessment, Technology, School/Home Partnership, and Instructional. The Assessment Cadre formulates and analyzes standardized test data to find areas to improve. The Technology Cadre devises ways to implement technology into the curriculum as well as ordering new, and organizing the existing technology within the school for optimal use by students and teachers. Great deals of success with our students depend on the two-way communication with families and staying close and in touch with our community. This is the role of the School/Home Partnership Cadre. The Instructional Cadre works to develop and implement various strategies in order to raise achievement among students.

Each Cadre's focus is around the three interventions of VOCABULARY, SUMMARIZING, and ANALYZING to increase comprehension in all domains such as Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Health and Science.

Some activities and programs that we implement to support our continued successes are:
*Reading Counts
*Mentoring Programs
*Family Reading Night-Make and Take Activities
*Publication of tips for parents in our weekly newsletter
*Use of graphic organizers, story maps and sign language to go beyond the text
*Guided Reading
*Literature Circles
*Teaching through Association Methods- drawing connections to prior knowledge
*Word Walls
*Use of Multimedia and Technology across the curriculum
*Family Math Night
* Literacy Place (Reading Program) Technology software available for all classroom Teachers. We have WiggleWorks for K-2nd grade students and Smart Place for 3rd - 5th Grade students.
* Reading Recovery (RR)
* Language Arts Reading Specialist (LARS)

To assess how we are doing, we examine and compare from Baseline Standardized Scores as well as Teacher Observation and Performance Assessments. The Terra Nova is the Standardized Assessment. Click here for scores from previous years. The DRA (Developmental Reading Inventory), SRI (Scholastic Reading Inventory), and the Literacy Place tests serve as our local forms of Assessment.

THE IDEAL STUDENT AT ARGONNER ELEMENTARY

SCHOOL IS:

…Someone who takes responsibility for themselves - the way they look, talk, and the way they act.

…Someone who attends school regularly brings a note excusing illness (or an emergency) upon returning to school and personally checks with each teacher to get pre-excused for any absence other than illness or emergency.

…Someone who gets to class on time with appropriate learning materials. Exercises good study skills and work habits, and upon completing an assignment, quietly finds something constructive to do rather than disrupting others.

…Someone who chooses to work on self-improvement by striving to get the right answers while creatively thinking of several solutions to a problem. Does their homework and hands in assignments on time: corrects own mistakes.

…Someone who has good manners - can say “please” and “thank you” - is friendly, courteous, and shows respect to everyone in our school, regardless of whom the person may be.

…Someone who is honest with themselves and with the property of others. If they make a mistake, admit it, receives the consequence, and continues with a positive attitude.

…Someone who follows the basic rules of our school.

…Someone who can pick up his or her own litter and put it in a trash can (and is willing to pick up after someone else who might forget to do so!)

…Someone who volunteers to do a little extra to make a class, our school or the community a better place.
